9.0 Appendices

Part 9 collects the book’s reference apparatus and practical toolkit: the material you reach for while doing the work rather than reading straight through. Where Parts 1 through 8 explain principles and recommendations, these appendices give you the definitions, ready-to-use artifacts, self-assessment, sources, and navigation that support them. Each is written to stand alone, so you can link a team directly to a single appendix without requiring them to have read the rest of the book first.

Topics in this part

  • 9.1 Glossary: Definitions of the terms and acronyms used across the book, from DORA and SPACE to SLO, MTTR, and Goodhart’s law.
  • 9.2 Metric definitions and formulas reference: Every formula in the book, gathered in one place, with its precise definition and unit.
  • 9.3 Checklists: Ready-to-use quick-reference checklists for metric review, dashboard launch, and metrics program audit.
  • 9.4 Templates: Copy-paste templates for a metrics charter, a dashboard specification, and a metric review agenda.
  • 9.5 Maturity self-assessment: The five-level maturity model from every topic, consolidated into one matrix for organizational self-assessment, alongside topic 8.4’s cross-cutting program model.
  • 9.6 References and further reading: A consolidated bibliography of the works cited throughout the book.
  • 9.7 Index: A subject index mapping key concepts to the topics where they appear.

How to use these appendices

Treat them as living companions to the topics. When a topic recommends a practice, the corresponding appendix helps you act on it: topic 1.4 (metrics governance) pairs with the metrics charter template in topic 9.4; the security topic (6.4) pairs with the vulnerability-severity definitions in topic 9.2; and the maturity section of every topic feeds the consolidated self-assessment in topic 9.5. Start from a topic’s recommendations, then use these appendices to turn them into artifacts, assessments, and a rollout plan (topic 8.5). Terms in any topic are defined in the glossary (topic 9.1), and the index (topic 9.7) helps you find where a concept is treated in depth.
